Krystian Kymerson and Jeremy Johnston head into Round 4 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic
Brazil’s Krystian Kymerson and America’s Jeremy Johnston clinched top honours in their respective Round 3 (Round of 96) heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic that continued at the Huntington Beach Pier in California,
America, on Thursday, March 29.
The successful result in their Round 3 heats served to carry both Kymerson and Johnston into the fourth round (Round of 64). Japan’s Izuki Tanaka and Brazil’s Franklin Serpa successfully extended their life in the event as well after securing runner-up position
in the third and fourth heat respectively.
Mother Nature refused to give her blessings to the latest ASP 4-Star event for the second consecutive day, forcing the surfers to carry out their business in demanding surfing conditions as a result. While the size of the waves was pretty decent, it was
the frequency at which these good waves appeared that was keeping the surfers at bay.
As the third heat got underway, the 19-year-old Kymerson adjust exceptionally well to the surfing conditions at hand. Locking his first business-wave, he posted an 8.17 on the scoreboard and managed to add an additional 6.33 points to his account to finish
with a heat-total of 14.50 points, the highest heat-total of the day.
“That was a good heat for me and I’m so happy to start my contest off with a heat win,” Kymerson said. “The waves were really good and hopefully I can do it again in my heat tomorrow.”
Tanaka was quite decent during the course of the heat as well, earning a couple of scores in the five-point range to finish with a heat-total of 11.76 points.
America’s Fisher Heverly barely missed out on clutching a place in the next round after finishing with a heat-total of 11.27 points. Hawaii’s Florence rounded out the fourth position after finishing the heat with a two-wave total of 5.07 points. Both the
surfers found themselves out of the contention for the event title as a result.
The fourth heat featured a low-scoring contest, with Johnston’s heat-total of 10.96 proving to be more than sufficient to seal the fate of the battle in his favour.
Serpa secured his place in the next round as well after scoring a 6.17 and 4.57 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 10.74 points.
America’s Tim Curran and his compatriot Balaram got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 9.97 and 7.04 points respectively.
