Ksenia Pervak exits from opening round as Chan Yung-Jan moves ahead – WANLIMA Women’s Open 2011
Third seeded Russian Ksenia Pervak was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury after she was 1-4 down against Taiwanese Chan Yung-Jan at the WANLIMA International Women’s Open 2011, an outdoor hard court event held in Guangzhou,
People’s Republic of China. The Taiwanese on the other hand advanced into the second round on Tuesday.
Ranked 37th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Pervak fell to the Taiwanese, ranked 105 spots below her, for the first time in their fourth meeting. The Russian still got the lead in the head-to-head series by
3-1 against Chan but was ousted from the opening round on this WTA International event.
20-year-old Russian was a bit nervous from the start of the match. She even lost her opening serve but roared back in the very next game. However, Pervak failed to equalise the scores and gifted away another serve in the fourth
game to trail 1-3. After the Taiwanese held her serve in the fifth game, Pervak felt severe pain on her shoulder and was eventually forced to retire.
Pervak was in awesome form from the past few months. She made final berths at Zlin and Baku and reached semi-final at Bad Gastein. In addition to this, she clinched her first title of the season at Tashkent WTA International event
before entering at Guangzhou.
22-year-old Chan on the other hand showed brilliant skills. She produced a better first serve share of 67 percent as compared to the seed’s 59 percent and registered an impressive 67 percent win on it. The Taiwanese saved one out
of two breakpoints faced and capitalised on half of the four breakpoint chances to her advantage.
Chan will move on to face Pole Urszula Radwanska in the second round of this tournament. Radwanska dumped Australian Anastasia Rodionova in straight sets to reach this spot.
Another casualty of the day is the sixth seeded Italian Alberta Brianti who was ousted by a local star Jie Zheng in straight sets on their third meeting. The Italian failed to avenge her defeat at Toronto earlier this season and
repeated her losing ways to exit from the opening round.
World number 58, Brianti exchanged three breaks and dragged the opening set to a tie-breaker. However, she trailed in it to suffer a 6-7(3) loss.
Brianti managed to convert one out of four breakpoint opportunities to her advantage in the final set but saved only two out of four breakpoints faced. She eventually lost the final set with a 4-6 defeat.
