Ksenia Pervak upsets Julia Goerges in first round of Monterrey Open 2011
Russian Ksenia Pervak stunned fourth seeded Julia Goerges in the first round of the Whirlpool Abierto Monterrey Open 2011 at Monterrey on Tuesday.
Goerges, who reached her career high ranking of 33 at the end of January 2011, looked completely out of touch at the outdoor hard courts of the event.
She conceded the crucial first serve break early on and then had a terrible time keeping up with her opponent as she lost the first set 6-1. The German opened the second set on a much better note. She fought hard to stay in the set but when she was trailing
5-6, Pervak came up with a series of great shots to end the match in straight sets 6-1, 7-5.
The world number 33 had a tough time finding the right rhythm and form. She broke the Russian back a couple of times to stay in the match but a high unforced-error percentage meant that she was always fighting a losing battle. She missed an easy forehand
volley during the first set that allowed Pervak to dominate in the match later on.
Despite her good run at the Australian Open 2011 where she reached the third round, Goerges has been unable to deliver the goods when it matters. She was seeded number one in Bogota and Acapulco earlier in the season but failed to go past the second round
in both tournaments. Now another failure at a Women Tennis Association tournament suggests that she is still struggling to find her best form.
On the other hand, her opponent Russian Ksenia Pervak took complete advantage of her inability to win points at crucial moments. She executed her shots to perfection and pushed the German to the baseline from where she had very few answers.
Other seeded players had better results in the hard-court tournament. Number five seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia defeated Laura Pous-Tio of Spain in straight sets  6-2, 6-4, and number six Italian Sara Errani had an easy 6-2, 6-4 win over Johanna Larsson
of Sweden.
Meanwhile second-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova battled past Eleni Daniilidou of Greece as she survived a mid-match lapse to win 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. American Melanie Oudin outlasted her compatriot Vania King 6-4, 6-1 while Czech Lucie Hradecka breezed
past Zuzana Ondraskova 6-3, 6-1.
