Kubrat Pulev nails Alexander Dimitrenko to win European heavyweight title – Boxing news
Kubrat Pulev, the IBF international heavyweight champion, put forth the boxing fanatics a flawless performance and grabbed an impressive 11th round knockout win over Alexander Dimitrenko, the former EBU (European) heavyweight champion, in a 12-round bout
held on May 5, 2012.
The duo co-headlined the Saturday night show which was televised live from Messehalle arena situated in Erfurt, Thuringen, Germany. The event was promoted by the duo of Wilfried Sauerland of Sauerland Event and Ulf Steinforth of Sport Events Steinforth and
the showdown was headlined by the WBO cruiserweight championship bout between Marco Huck and Ola Afolabi.
Pulev, 31, outclassed Alexander in almost every significant facet of the sport and did not give the German proud even a split chance to overcome him. The Bulgarian proud was entering in his 16th bout and since the inception of his career has never lost even
a single one. Kubrat, widely known as ‘The Cobra’, grabbed his IBF title from Travis Walker and successfully defended it against Michael Sprott.
His opponent, Alexander, 29, possessed an upper hand over Pulev as far as the experience is concerned but still was no match for the Bulgarian’s high-calibre pugilism. Dimitrenko, well known as the ‘Sascha’, was entering in his 34th career bout and boasted
32 wins with 21 of them via knockout.
Sascha grabbed his EBU (European) heavyweight title after collecting a fifth round technical knockout win over Yaroslav Zavorotnyi and since then defended it successfully against Albert Sosnowski and Michael Sprott.
The bout started in a sluggish way and both brawlers adopted a defensive stance throwing well-calculated jabs at frequent intervals. During the first two rounds, Alexander possessed a bit upper hand since he connected some hefty jabs to Pulev’s body.
But from the third round and onwards, the scenario change since Pulev, who was initially analysing his opponent’s brawling style, leashed his attack. During the fourth round, Pulev connected a huge right hand that shook Dimitrenko’s senses.
It was the sixth round when Alexander received a cut close to his left eye that eventually hampered his performance for the rest of the bout. But still the German pugilist did not lose his grip over the battle and kept on attacking Pulev with intense force.
The duo threw everything they had and at the end of the tenth round both men were seriously exhausted. In the very beginning of the 11th round, Alexander received a huge right-hand jab followed by an upper cut which eventually flattened him on the ring floor.
The referee completed his 10-count and announced Kubrat Pulev as the owner of the EBU (European) heavyweight title. With this win, Pulev has grabbed his 16th career win and successfully defended his IBF title and the undefeated win streak.
Alexander, on the contrary, has received his second career loss and first ever by knockout. Kubrat is now being eye balled as the strongest contender for any one of the Klitschko brothers.
