Kuchar in control at Cog Hill
He's only halfway through the opening nine holes of the BMW Championship at Cog Hill, Illinois today, but Matt Kuchar seems to be cruising, shooting three birdies and an eagle to lead the field by two strokes at the midway point.
Starting on the 10th, Kuchar made the first eagle of the week on the 15th to add to a trio of birdies that see him head onto the front nine on five-under-par. Columbia's Camilo Vilegas and the USA's Kevin Na, Dustin Johnson and Vaughn Taylor were tied for second place on three-under.
Luke Donald was among those tied for sixth place on two-under-par at the halfway point of today's opening round of the BMW Championship today at Cog Hill, as was South Africa's Retief Goosen.
Rickie Fowler is one-under, carding three birdies and a pair of bogeys having played as far as the 12th. Earlier this week Fowler was announced as one of Corey Pavin's wildcard picks for the Ryder Cup, and the 21-year-old will be hoping to put in a good show this weekend, if only to validate the trust his captain has placed in him.
England's Justin Rose was on the same score, having also played 12 holes, while Monday's Deutsche Bank Championship winner Charley Hoffman is yet to really start firing, having shot a solitary birdie in nine holes to share 11th place with Rose.
Ryder Cup casualty Anthony Kim, out of form since his comeback from a thumb injury a month ago, started with a birdie on the 10th but has been unable to add to it and joins the one-under club, having played nine holes.
Among those yet to start their rounds include England's Ian Poulter and Paul Casey, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, as well as South Africa's Ernie Els and the top two players in the world, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. In order to progress to the Tour Championship, where the FedEx Cup itself is up for grabs, players will need to finish in the top 30 here.
