Kumar Sangakkara admits he knows little about the Canadian team
Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan captain, admitted that he knew little about their first opponents, Canada, whom they face in their first ICC World Cup 2011 match on Sunday.
He conceded that his knowledge of the Canadian team is only confined to their experienced batsman John Davison, who smashed the world’s fastest century against West Indies.
“I know Davison, who scored the fastest World Cup hundred and not too much,” Sangakkara stated when the reporters inquired if he knew anything about the current Canadian squad.
The 40-year-old right-handed Canadian batsman has been the heart of his home’s national side for almost a decade. He headlined the 2003 World Cup when he stunned the West Indian team with his blazing 111 off 76 balls.
However, the Sri Lankan skipper seemed unfazed by the ace batsman’s credentials as he stated that his team needs to focus on their own performance.
“I don’t think when we go to play sides that we haven’t played much that we should worry... (it depends on) how well we do,” said Sangakkara.
He said that his team might not know much about the minnows, but they are aware that their first World Cup game is as important as other games with the more stronger teams.
He stated that Sri Lanka has the “firepower” to beat Canada and that they should not brush off the talent of the Canadian team. He also added that they must improve to make sure that they beat http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748 “without problems.”
Sri Lanka have already begun their World Cup campaign by comfortably winning their two warm-up matches against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753. The batsmen and the bowlers had an encouraging workout before they officially begin their World Cup bid from February
20th, at Hambantota, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
Sangakkara also added that the team is aware of the pressure to play on the revamped stadium at home, that is being used for the first time for an International fixture.
Sri Lanka and Canada have only met once, back in the 2003 World Cup, where the Canadians were dismissed for 36 runs, recording the lowest ever total in a World Cup match.
