The former Sri Lankan skipper and incumbent legendary opener, Kumar Sangakkara, has applauded the Southwark Crown Court’s verdict on spot-fixing scandal of the Pakistani trio, claiming that this step will help purging cricket from corruption.
The star batsman argues that the sentence meted out to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Salman-Butt-c2418 has proved that the world cricket governing bodies are not passive to the heinous issue and efforts are underway to nail the vice.
Sangakkara strongly believes that this historical ruling will serve as deterrent for other players who may think of replicating the same as the fixed trio did. He also opines that the gruesome saga has earned sheer disrepute and damage to the game.
Talking to the media today on the sidelines of his team’s ongoing Test match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 at UAE, the legend said, “Something like that does a lot of harm to the game. But, on the other hand, the decisions made during the trial, even though harsh, help
the game to come out of it. After this case we can say that we are doing something about it (fixing) and we don’t tolerate any sort of fixing.”
Along with expressing sympathies for the families of the tainted trio, Sangakkara churned out that every offense brings punishment in its wake.
He told, “You have to feel some empathy because it has been very hard for the families, the supporters and the administrators of the game. But, unfortunately, the thing is that if you do the crime, you do the time and it’s been proven that you cannot get
away with things like that."
In the backdrop of confirmation of their crime, the jury handed over 30 months, 12 months and 6 months of imprisonments to Butt, Asif and Amir respectively a couple of days back. They are behind the bars now.
Sangakkara, who is currently fielding at Day 3 of the final Test game after lashing 144 in Sri Lanka’s first innings, articulated absolute resentment towards corruption.
The 34-year-old has played 102 Test, 301 ODI and 32 T20I games so far, scoring 8972, 9540 and 874 runs respectively in the three formats. He relinquished the captaincy voluntarily after the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Cricket World Cup 2011.
