Kuo Po-cheng wins Asiad 8-ball gold
Chinese Taipei won their second gold medal of the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games on Monday.
Kuo Po-cheng topped the men's 8-ball event in billiards after beating Malaysian Ibrahim Amir 7-4 in the final at the Asian Games Town Gymnasium.
Although the boyish-looking Kuo is the favoured cue artist, it was Ibrahim who set the early pace after winning the first two racks.
However, Kuo took the next six frames to take a commanding lead. Amir bounced back to win two-straight racks but Kuo regained his composure to close out the match in the 11th rack.
Kuo's victory gave Chinese Taipei their second gold medal of the quadrennial sporting meet following the men's team's victory in soft tennis on Sunday.
Alok Kumar of India and Irsal Afrinneza Nasution of Indonesia took home the bronze medals. Kumar earlier upset legendary pool icon Efren Reyes of the Philippines in the first round.
In the men's snooker team final, China defeated India 3-1. Ding Junhui, Liang Wenbo and Tian Pengfei combined forces to defeat the Indian trio of Damani Brijesh, Mehta Aditya Sneha and Merchant Yasin.
The bronze medals were shared by Pakistan's Shehzad Sohail, Changezi Shahram and Shehzad Imran and Thailand's Un-nooh Thepchaiya, Noppachorn Noppadon and Pu-ob-orm Ratchapol.
In the men's carom three-cushion last 16, Thailand's Thawat Sujaritthurakarn crushed Saudi Arabia's Abdullah Almihzam 18-6 while Japan's Tsuyoshi Suzuki breezed past Mongolia's Dorjsuren Batbayar 40-11.
Japan's Joji Kai edged South Korean Kim Kyung-roul 40-39 while India's Dharminder Lilly Singh walloped Saudi Arabia's Fahad Sulaiman Albarrak 40-16.
Also chalking up wins were Vietnam’s Ly The Vinh and South Korea’s Heo Jung-han.. Ly defeated Rodolfo Luat of the Philippines 40-29 while Heo showed no mercy as he dominated Indian Vijay Goel 40-5.
In the women's 6-red snooker, China's Chen Siming downed India's Vidya Viswanathan 4-1 while Chinese Taipei's Chan Ya-ting blanked Filipina Floriza Andal 4-0.
Joining them in the quarterfinals were South Korea's Lim Yun-mi, who ousted Singapore's Charlene Chai 4-3 and Hong Kong's Ng On Yee, who downed Thailand's Maliwan Sangklar 4-0.
Action also started in the women's 9-ball pool singles. Vietnamese bets Doan Thi Ngoc Le and Duong Thuy Vi posted easy victories to progress to the next round. Doan whipped Mongolia's Uyanga Battulga 7-2
while Duong clobbered Maldives' Nuzrath Najeeb 7-1.
Also advancing was Thailand's Nicha Pathom-Ekmongkhon, who slipped past Mongolia's Zoljargal Zorigt 7-5. Joining them in the next phase was local bet Pan Xiaoting, who booted out Singapore’s Hoe Shu Wah
7-2.
