Kurt-Asle Arvesen crashes at 70 kph but manages to finish stage 5 at Vuelta a Espana
Team Sky rider Kurt-Asle Arvesen who is riding at his last grand tour crashed at stage 5 of Vuelta a Espana but managed to finish the stage. Cyclist was riding at 70 kph when crashed in Valdepenas de Jaen and that was good enough to abandon the race but
the Norwegian continued as he finished the stage 5 at 169th position.
The Norwegian cyclist was at a descent when he crashed with a boy who came in front of Kurt’s bike leaving him with no time to react and avoid the collision as he mentioned, "I saw that it was going to go completely wrong, I saw the whites of his eyes just
before I hit him, fearing the worst. This is definitely the worst I have experienced on the bike.”
Boy survived with only minor injuries to his lip whereas Arvesen’s bike was completely destroyed but he was lucky to survive with few bruises but he was mainly concerned about the boy.
The 36-year-old was looking ahead to participate in World Champions but chances of his inclusion at the event are very rare as he said, “I must give it a few days first. Am I not 100 percent, but we have others who can do a good job. I will not take any
decision on it now, but I feel surprisingly good.”
This is most likely to be Arvesen’s final season before his retirement and it has not been a smooth one as he has already faced a lot of accidents including a major crash at Paris-Roubaix as he had to quit the race.
Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver of team Katusha won the stage 5 of Vuelta a Espana 2011 as he finished the race in 4:42:54 with Wout Poels of Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling team at second and Daniel Moreno Fernandez of team Katusha at third position.
Vuelta a Espana has entered to its stage 6 as riders will fight at a 185.7 kilometre stage that will favour the sprinters as Sylvain Chavanel, Daniel Moreno and Joaquin Rodriquez are at the first, second and third positions respectively after the stage 5
general classification.
