Kurt Crosland seizes Men’s 100m backstroke gold – New Zealand SC Championships
Kurt Crosland of Neptune Swimming Club-OT seized gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke in 16 and over age category on first day of the State 2012 New Zealand Short Course Championships at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Wellington on Sunday, September 30.
The 28-year-old Crosland demonstrated his astonishing efforts in the four-lap backstroke discipline and proved his mettle for gold medal. Crosland remained prominently away from his toughest challenger and paved his way to the wall for the title.
His gruelling effort remained more than half a body length ahead of his closest swimmer as he tapped the wall for the crown by submitting a time of 52.96 seconds.
His title claiming effort remained 0.71 seconds faster from his following swimmer, Corey Main of Howick Pakuranga-CO, who chased him on the victory stand for silver medal by producing an effort of 53.67 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Gareth Kean of Capital Swim Club-WN, who stayed 1.35 seconds apart and surfaced on the wall as third position holder by reporting a time of 55.02 seconds.
Kean was trailed by Julian Weir of Aquabladz Taranaki Swim Club-TR, who was 0.39 seconds behind and clocked a time of 55.41 seconds for fourth position.
Subsequently, fifth fastest qualifying position of the event was traced by Cameron James of AquaGym Swim Team-CB, who stayed just an inch away from him and touched the wall with an effort of 55.46 seconds.
James was traced by Max Polianski of United Swimming Club-AK, who was 0.37 seconds apart and transpired on the wall as sixth best finisher by reporting a time of 55.83 seconds.
Seventh best place of the race was secured by Benjamin Gillies of North Shore Swimming-AK, who remained marginally slower from his former finisher and tapped the wall with a timing of 56.18 seconds.
Similarly, Gillies remained 0.47 seconds ahead of Corneille Coetzee of Coast Swim Club-AK, who failed to overpower any of his opponents and posted a time of 56.65 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Crosland received appreciation from the aquatic crowd for his unrelenting efforts after the event.
