Kurt Rambis and David Kahn meet; discuss Minnesota Timberwolves future – NBA Update
On Thursday, General Manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves David Kahn finally had a meeting with head coach Kurt Rambis. In the four hour meeting, the duo discussed the future of the Timberwolves and the steps needed to be taken
to affect change in the team.
The meeting came after two months of silence on the part of David Kahn on the Minnesota Timberwolves coaching situation. The silence even prompted Kurt Rambis to voice his discontent at being left out in the cold, but David Kahn
said it seemed necessary to him to do things this way,
"I felt very strongly that if Kurt and I had tried to have some substantive conversations immediately after the season, it probably wouldn't have been very productive because of the way we ended our season," Kahn said. "It was
pretty raw. And I thought there needed to be a significant cooling off period."
The end of the season Kahn referred to was the 15 game losing streak that the Minnesota Timberwolves endured to finish the campaign. The abysmal run left the Timberwolves rock bottom of the NBA standings. It also put coach Kurt
Rambis’ future in serious doubt and he spent the last two months wondering if he will be coming back to coach the side next season.
Kurt Rambis was the assistant to the Los Angeles Lakers legendary, now retired, coach Phil Jackson two years ago when David Kahn hired him as head coach of the Timberwolves. The coach came in to start a huge rebuilding project
at the Minnesota franchise but his time at the Timberwolves has been pretty disastrous, admittedly in part because of the quality of players at his disposal.
Still just 32 wins in two seasons, and 132 losses, do not make good reading. In light of the Timberwolves falling apart at the back end of the previous season, GM David Kahn said he has given an assignment to coach Rambis.
Rambis has been told to write down a detailed report on the changes he would make to turn things around at the franchise and make the Timberwolves a strong team. The decision on Rambis’ future would wait until then,
"I really asked him to be as comprehensive and as thorough as possible. ... And I assured him that we would meet before any decision was made and this was really the quickest day that we could meet," Kahn said on Friday.
The Timberwolves have a young squad led by the talented Kevin Love and Michael Beasley. The Spanish point guard they drafted two years ago, Ricky Rubio, also declared earlier that he will finally be joining the team next season.
Add to that the 2nd pick in the NBA Draft and Minnesota are in a good position to build something substantial for the future.
