Kurt Rambis set to be fired as Minnesota Timberwolves head coach – NBA Update
Minnesota Timberwolves are ready to fire their head coach Kurt Rambis at long last. Rambis’ future had been shrouded in uncertainty ever since the season ended and now insiders suggest that GM David Kahn has finally decided to
pull the plug on his two year tenure.
Kurt Rambis was an assistant to the legendary Phil Jackson at the Los Angeles Lakers before joining the Minnesota Timberwolves as head coach. He came over in 2009 to start a massive rebuilding project at the twin cities but failed
to live up to expectations.
Minnesota had an abysmal record of 32 – 132 during Rambis’ two seasons in charge and crashed to league worst 17 – 65 in the 2010-2011 season. The team’s 15 game losing streak at the end immediately put Kurt Rambis’ position under
threat and GM David Kahn publicly declared that he was not happy with the way things had gone.
However, Kahn refrained from making a decision with regards to Rambis in the heat of the moment and the media did not get any updates from him during the last two months or so. In the meantime David Kahn gave Kurt Rambis a summer
assignment, asking him to prepare a detailed written report on how he planned to turn things around at the Minnesota franchise.
Kurt Rambis recently turned in the report but now it seems that didn’t satisfy GM David Kahn who has made up his mind to fire the embattled head coach.
Kahn is reportedly unsure if Rambis is the right man for the job anymore as his favoured triangle offense has failed to produce any results for the team. With Ricky Rubio, the Spanish point guard Minnesota drafted two years ago,
finally joining the franchise this summer, the triangle offense has become even more unsuitable for the Timberwolves.
Rambis relationship with the team’s young talented players is also a bit strained and the Timberwolves have decided to freshen things up on the sidelines rather than upset the young core of the team, such as star big man Kevin
Love.
The delay in the announcement appears to be because of the upcoming NBA Draft 2011. The Minnesota Timberwolves have the second overall pick and are expected to draft either Turkish youngster Enes Kanter or forward Derrick Williams.
With numerous trade rumours going on as well regarding the Timberwolves making moves for big time players such as Andrew Bynum, it seems that they are finally ready to become a serious player on the NBA scene. Kurt Rambis must
be disappointed thus on leaving the franchise at the wrong time.
