Kurt Suzuki shines offensively for Washington Nationals since coming from Oakland Athletics - MLB
Catcher Kurt Suzuki keeps the Washington Nationals’ offence afloat with the home-runs and the RBIs that he is contributing since joining the line-up. The Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson believes he was not oblivious to his talent and even before he was
acquired his credentials were known by him.
By the time Suzuki was traded from the Oakland Athletics, the Nationals needed a catcher that can help them defensively and at the same can alleviate the burden on Jesús Flores.
His inclusion was also triggered by the likelihood of an injury to the existing catcher Flores.
Fortunately he has lived up to the requirements of the team. Apart from the fine defensive plays by him, he has hammered quality hits and has played a critical role on number of occasions in winning games for the team.
Along with the rest of the hitters, he has lifted Washington's offence in the last couple of weeks.
He has been as impressive as any other batter in the line-up. In light of the impending post-season, the form he enjoys at the moment spells a healthy sign for the team.
Suzuki talks about the home-run that he struck the other day. He is swinging at the throws right and is finding good hits against them.
"It's getting a good pitch to hit and trying to put a good swing on it and trying not to do too much," he said. "Baseball is weird. Sometimes you run into them, and sometimes you don't."
Johnson is surprised that Suzuki is hitting the same way as he saw him last time back in 2008 Olympic. He terms him another threat for the opponents along with other formidable batters present in the line-up.
"He's swinging the bat like he did there," Johnson said. "He's short to the ball, and he's got some pop. And everybody knows he's a great defender. So he just fits right in. Everybody in the lineup is a threat right now."
Suzuki is capable of putting up splendid shows during the important games. It will be interesting to see whether he keeps his form intact throughout the season or not.
