The Kurukuru squad would be going to Spain for the preparation of 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup. Solomon Island also known as Kurukuru won the 2011 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Futsal Championship. They defeated Tahiti in the final of the championship
held from May 15 to 21 at the Vodafone Arena Suva, Fiji.
The news was also endorsed by the President of OFC and the Vice President of FIFA, David Chung. The Vice President of FIFA sent a letter of appreciation to the OFC on organising the event successfully for the eighth time.
The announcement was made today by the Vice President of Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), Martin Alufurai, during a press conference held after the team returned home with the Winning Trophy.
He also appreciated the performance of Kurukuru on winning the championship for the fourth time and earning a place in the World Cup for the second time. FIFA has also announced a grant of NZ$25000 for the Kurukuru team to support them in the preparation
of the World Cup.
SIFF officials are planning to build a Futsal Stadium in the country of international standards. This will give the sport an official platform in the country and would attract the youth to adopt the sport.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between Spanish Football Federation and OFC to verify the proposed plan for Kurukuru to train in Spain. The signing will take place in Zurich, Switzerland in order to train and play matches and prepare the
Kurukuru squad for the FIFA Futsal World Cup.
The President and the General Secretary, Eddie Ngava, will sign the MoU with the Spanish Football Federation. They will be leaving for Zurich by the end of this week.
The main aim for the Kurukuru team, during their training in Spain, is to enhance their playing skills and to prepare them for the World Cup. Spain is the champion of the last FIFA Futsal World Cup and Kurukuru outfit will learn a lot by playing with the
Spanish Futsal players. This will help to raise the level of quality-game in Solomon Islands and the Oceania region.
