Kurukuru squad aiming for a fourth win at the OFC Futsal Championship – Futsal News
Kurukuru is eying for their fourth straight win at the Oceanic Football Confederation (OFC) Futsal Championship. The Solomon Island Futsal national team also known as Kurukuru, is one of the most successful Futsal teams in the region.
Kurukuru have also represented the region at the FIFA Futsal Championship, in 2008. The championship is also a qualifier event for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup. There are eight teams from the Oceania region participating in the championship. The top is
from the Solomon Islands.
Coach of the Kurukuru Dickson, Kadau, has observed the highest level of co-ordination and determination in his squad to win the championship.
Kadau, said, “My players have given their best in training and I am confident their hard work will bring them the results they want, "Hard work has been the main ingredient in our preparations and all the players have displayed their desire to win with their
performances during training. The least I can say is that I'm very proud of them.”
Captain of the team, Elliot Ragomo, is a key example of the team’s determination as a unit. He has turned down an offer to play in the Australian Futsal team and has put aside his studies on hold, to concentrate on the training for the OFC Futsal Championship.
The team will feature the same players who appeared in the 2010 OFC Futsal Championship. Samuel Osifelo is only one new name this year on the squad, who has made a comeback to the team. He was the part of the Solomon team which participated in the 2008 FIFA
Futsal championship.
The team is well prepared for the upcoming championship. They have not wasted time after winning the last year’s title and have been working hard to improve their game not only for the OFC Futsal Championship, but they have long term goals to mark a notable
performance in the FIFA Futsal Cup.
The team got a boast on the return of Jack Wetney from Vanuatu. He has been playing for Amicale team of Vanuatu. He joined the team during the training camp. Solomon Island is placed in the Group B along with New Caledonia, Tahiti and Tuvalu.
Team manager, Mapuru Tausingam, said, “We know we are the champions but we also know we are the team everyone wants to beat, nobody is being complacent and the players have made lots of sacrifices.”
Kurukuru or Solomon Island National team will face the New Caledonia squad in their opening match. The event will be held from May 16-20 and the winning team will be making their way to the FIFA Futsal Cup. Solomon Island is no doubt a strong contender for
the title.
