Kveta Peschke/ Katarina Srebotnik slay Lisicki/ Stosur to clinch title win – Wimbledon 2011
Second seeds, Czech Kveta Peschke and Slovene Katarina Srebotnik crushed German Australian pair of Sabine Lisicki and Samantha Stosur with a breadstick at Women’s Doubles – Wimbledon Championships 2011, a Grand Slam event held
on grass courts in London, United Kingdom. They registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the German Australian pair to clinch their first Grand Slam title on Saturday.
The Czech Slovene tandem put up a magnificent display of tennis to dump the unseeded pair in straight sets in just over an hour at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. They won their first ever major title after overpowering
Lisicki and Stosur on the Centre Court and Peschke ensured double joy for Czechs at Wimbledon after Petra Kvitova won Women’s Singles to become the first Czech to win a Grand Slam since Jana Novotna in 1998.
Peschke and Srebotnik were unaware of their opponents since the match between German Australian pair and lucky losers, New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic and Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn was suspended at 5-5 due to bad light. However,
Lisicki and Stosur high spiritedly entered the Centre Court in afternoon and clinched the decider 8-6 to reach this final spot.
The Czech Slovene duo made a terrible entry at SW-19 as they fell to 1-3 deficit. However, they got themselves together and unleashed a flurry of powerful groundstrokes to reel off the next five games in a row to clinch the opener
with a 6-3 win.
They continued their run of form in the final set as they stroke out first three games in a row. Peschke and Srebotnik were 3-0 40-0 up before they gift away their serve due to many unforced errors Peschke committed. However, they
quickly re-kindle their spark and bagged last three games to seal the set with a breadstick in just under half hour.
Overall, the Peschke Srebotnik tandem clobbered a much better first serve share of 70 percent as compared to their rivals’ 54 percent and registered an impressive 65 percent win on it. They also saved five out of seven breakpoints
conceded and converted six out of eight breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to win comfortably.
"It's a terrific feeling," the 35-year-old beaming Peschke said. "I mean, I'm playing for so many years, so this is the cherry on the cake... We played magnificent through the whole tournament and through the whole year. We are
happy to have the trophy in our hands.”
The winning combination of Peschke and Srebotnik is in its top form this season. They showed flawless performances to win titles at Auckland, Doha and Eastbourne and put the cherry on the cake in their run of form by winning their
first Grand Slam title here.
