Kveta Peschke/ Katarina Srebotnik swallow Kops-Jones/Spears to clinch title – Mercury Open 2011
Top seeds, Czech Kveta Peschke and Slovene Katarina Srebotnik swat past Americans Raquel Kops-Jones Abigail Spears with a bagel at the Mercury Insurance Open 2011, a WTA event held on the hard courts at the La Costa Resort and
Spa in Carlsbad, United States. They registered a 6-0, 6-2 victory over the Americans to triumph their third straight title on Sunday.
The Czech Slovene duo raised the bar of their game at Eastbourne where they won their title. They continued their winning momentum at Wimbledon and they not only clinched their first Grand Slam title but also went 10-0 on grass
courts. Both stars became co number one and entered these Californian hard courts confidently. Peschke and Srebotnik kept their spark enlightened and not only extended their winning streak but also won back to back titles.
The seeds played exceptionally well in this event and lost a single set on their route to final. They lost the opener against Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci but crushed Kops-Jones and Spears in just under an hour.
Peschke and Srebotnik went berserk in the opening set as they unleashed their true colours to reel off first six games in a row to earn a bagel. They produced a similar first serve share of 72 percent but registered a tremendous
77 percent win on it. In addition to this, the pair warded off all three breakpoints faced and capitalised on three out of seven breakpoint opportunities to register this amazing 6-0 score line.
The Czech Slovene team warded off the only breakpoint conceded to keep their entire serves. The two breakpoint chances they converted to their advantage led them seal the set with a 6-2 score line. The highest ranked pair clobbered
a higher first serve share of 75 percent as opposed to their rivals’ 67 percent and earned a magnificent 78 percent win on it.
"We're so happy we could follow our wins at Eastbourne and London with this title," Peschke said. "It's a great achievement. With each match we're getting more confident and we are very happy we won this title. It's a beautiful,
beautiful area here. We enjoyed it a lot and we'd love to come back here next year."
The blooming Czech Slovene tandem is off for the main event at Toronto.
"We're looking forward to a day off and then going to Toronto for another big tournament," the Czech continued. "We have three more tournaments to go before the US Open - we'll just go match by match and see how it goes. I hope
we can keep doing this well all the time."
Peschke and Srebotnik are all geared up for Rogers Cup and are eyeing to extend their streak.
