Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik win Women’s Doubles title – AGEON International 2011
The Czech pair of Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik brushed aside the American-duo of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond to win their fifth WTA (Women Tennis Association) title at the AEGON International on Sunday.
The top-seeded pair smartly handled the American’s volleys, drop shots as well as heavy serving to claim a two-setter victory in Eastbourne. The final match score was 6-3, 6-0. It was yet another wonderful exhibition of talent
from Peschke and Srebotnik in windy conditions at Eastbourne.
Peschke and Srebotnik drew first blood as they broke Huber and Raymond in the opening games of the first set. The American-duo was quick to response as they broke back in the sixth game to level the score at 3-3. However, Huber
and Raymond were broken again in the ninth game and this time they failed to break back, losing the set 6-3.
The winning-duo hit a single ace and had a satisfactory first serve percentage, delivering 60 percent of the first serve and winning an equal ratio on them. In contrast, the American-duo kept their first serve percentage at 52
percent and won 60 percent of points behind them. The winning-duo saved two of three break points they saw and converted three of five break points in the first set.
Peschke and Katarina carried their rhythm into the second set and held their opening serve game brilliantly, winning the set without losing a single game. Both women displayed their exceptional skills to earn a higher first serve
share of 78 percent as opposed to their opponent’s 36 percent. The Czech-duo had an amazing chemistry as they converted three of four break points and sewed up the second set with a bagel.
A jubilant Srebotnik expressed her views in a post-match interview, saying, "It was weird to play semifinals and finals in the same day, and we're very happy to win them both, actually the whole week here wasn't easy to play because
of the windy and rainy conditions, but we dealt with it well. We're delighted to get another title under our belt, especially going into Wimbledon."
Peschke and Srebotnik come into Wimbledon off another successful run to the title at the AEGON International and they will be brimming with confidence again. Loss to Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Safarova earlier at the French Open
did not hinder their performance at the tournament, and with their fifth WTA Doubles title under their belt, the Czech-duo should be in fine form for the grass surface.
