On Saturday, CSA Under-19 three-day competition between KwaZulu-Natal Under-19s and Griqualand West Under-19s also ended without a result, as Griqualand West Under-19s, failed to bowl-out KwaZulu-Natal Under-19s to prevent them from reaching a target of 331 to win the match at Kingsmead, Durban.
Griqualand West Under-19s had dominated the three days of play beginning from their first innings score of 337 that left their opposition guessing right from the start.
On the final day, Griqualand West Under-19s initiated their second innings after KwaZulu-Natal Under-19s took a gutsy decision by declaring their innings on a first innings score of 63 for one.
This move was obviously taken in order to end the game with a conclusive result. However, with only a day left, both sides needed to play the match like a fifty-over event.
Griqualand West had the worst possible start as they lost five wickets by the time they had managed to post 36 runs on the board.
With the top batsmen already back in the pavilion, the batting side had little chance of putting a solid total on the board, and they now needed to survive the day in order to save the match, which was seemingly slipping out of their hands.
P Kruger and A Brooker failed to turn the tide in their favour as this pair saw its last on the dismissal of A Brooker, who perished after scoring only three runs when his side had amassed only 46 runs.
An over later, Kruger, also hit the showers as he lost his wicket to Mthimkhulu for six. This was an awkward situation for Griqualand West as their batsmen were losing wickets without scoring in double figures.
Consequently, they crumbled after posting 56 runs on the board with TL Moreki from KwaZulu-Natal giving a belligerent performance by grabbing five wickets.
KwaZulu-Natal Under-19s needed 331 runs to win, and with such a target ahead, the only logical plan would have been to stay on the wicket and see off the bowlers.
Griqualand West Under-19s needed to bowl majestically in order to grab an unlikely victory; however, they failed as they could take only six wickets with their opposition ending the day after posting 232 on the board.
BS Makhanya from KwaZulu-Natal Under-19s was impressive with an unbeaten innings of 102 runs.
