Kyle Busch penalised for six points in NASCAR championship – NASCAR news
Joe Gibbs Racing driver Kyle Busch and his team no. 18 have been penalised for 6 points in the NASCAR championship.
The penalty was awarded after Busch’s car failed the post-race technical inspection.
Joe Gibbs Racing revealed their views about the incident and said, “We brought the No. 18 car back to our race shop and have identified the problem which caused us to measure low during the post-race inspection process in Pocono [Sunday] afternoon. We have
made NASCAR aware of our findings and we accept the penalty they have issued today.”
Kyle Busch finished third in last weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono. His no. 18 Toyota Camry was inspected for technical reasons and was found lower at the front-left corner. The car had exceeded the ground clearance limit defined by the
NASCAR regulations and was even lower than the margin allowed.
After the inspection, Busch’s team was handed a six-point penalty but fortunately, it did not affect their season’s championship standings. With the present situation, he is four points ahead of his brother Kurt Busch who races for Penske Racing. Kyle Busch
is seated 31 points below from NASCAR championship points leader Carl Edwards and 20 points adrift of Kevin Harvick who occupies the fourth place on the table.
In addition to the penalty, Kyle Busch’s crew chief was charged with a fine worth 25,000 dollars for exceeding the mandatory limit. Along with the crew chief and the driver’s points, the team owner was also penalised for 6 points.
The present penalty has been kept proportional to the penalties given in the past for similar violations. It is due to the new points system applied in the 2011 NASCAR championship.
Busch team’s crew chief, Dave Rogers was disappointed to know the failure of their car in the post-race test at Pocono. Initially Rogers also regretted the incident. According to his analysis, the problem could have arisen after the long race of 500 miles
which went on for 200 laps.
