Kyle Drabek’s economical pitches helps Toronto Blue Jays rout Detroit Tigers, 4-2: MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays’ starter Kyle Drabek had a notable day as he pitched seven dominant innings and gave away just one run on three hits in the club's 4-2 win against the Detroit Tigers at the Comerica Park, Detroit, on May 16.
Drabek had just two strike-outs and allowed six walks. He said of his game, “I didn't get a chance to talk to [Detroit Tigers manager] Jim [Leyland] today -- I figured I'd wait until tomorrow for that. He's been in this game for a long time, and I've known
him all my life.”
In the very first inning, the Tigers got off the mark when Andy Dirks and Brennan Boesch both walked and Austin Jackson posted a single run to give the Tigers an initial 1-0 lead. Miguel Cabrera was about to score another run in the first inning, but he
was caught out by Jose Bautista in front of the right-field wall.
The pitchers displayed an outstanding performance from second to sixth inning and did not permit even a single run during this span. The credit goes to Drabek, who pitched in good line and length throughout his seven inning pitches.
The Jays’ Manager, John Farrell, had a huge ovation for Drabek as he said, “Obviously, he's putting people on base with the walks, but he's not letting them carry over to the next hitter. He's going after people, and he got some big outs.”
J.P. Arencibia singled by reaching at the third base on the bunt of John McDonald and posted a run on the sacrifice fly of Yunel Escobar. With the contribution of batters, the Jays were able to tie the score with 1-all in the seventh inning.
The Jays stepped on the gas and added three runs in the eighth inning to get a 4-1 lead. Juan Rivera and Arencibia both had a sacrifice fly while Aaron Hill doubled off the left field position to complete a three-run campaign. Jhonny Peralta struck a one-run
homer in the ninth inning to cut-off his club’s deficit, 4-2.
Joaquin Benoit was much expensive with the ball as he permitted three runs on four hits with three earned runs in just one inning pitched. He was unable to have any strike-out.
