Kyle Edmund, Bruno Sant’anna advance into the 2nd round – US Open Boys’ singles 2011
Britain’s tennis player Kyle Edmund held his nerves to floor Joris De Loore of Belgium 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 to book his place in the second round of 2011 US Open Boys’ singles on Sunday here in the City of New York.
Edmund, who is un-seeded at the prestigious Grand Slam tournament, looked in stunning form in his opening round match against De Loore. He took the opening set in a blink of an eye and although he lost his way in the second set,
he came back brilliantly to wrap up the match in the final set.
Dropping only seven games in a three set match goes on to suggest that he is playing with confidence. If he continue his decent form in the upcoming matches as well, he has a great chance of making to the final stages at the USTA
Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre.
De Loore, on the other hand, couldn’t capitalize on the chances he was presented with. After he wrapped up the second set with a blistering forehand winner down the line, the momentum had definitely shifted towards him. However
he played very rash and loose shots in the final set and let his opponent take control of the situation. Under pressure, he committed a large number of unforced errors, which of course closed all the doors for him to clinch victory.
In a match that lasted for nearly two hours, Edmund displayed some high quality tennis. His foot work was brilliant and he ran on the court like a hare. Breaking the serve at regular intervals, he did not allow his opponent to
breathe in the opening set. Dropping only a game, he bagged the opener to take the set score lead 1-0.
De Loore fought back hard to in the following set. Breaking his opponent three times in the set, he strengthened his position in the match. However, he was outplayed in the final set by the Brit, who dashed his formidable forehand
and backhand winners all over the court to seal a superb victory.
In another match at Flushing Meadows, Brazilian Bruno Sant’anna secured a “straight sets” 6-4, 6-4 victory over Belgian’s Kimmer Coppejans to make it to the second round.
Sant’anna served ferociously and he hit an impressive 64 per cent first serve. His quality served proved to be the main factor in his victory as he claimed 67 per cent of the points on his first serve. Playing the big points really
well, he converted four out nine break points in the match. Coppejans struggled in every department of the game and he suffered heavy blows.
