Kyle Edmund bounces over Pol Toledo Bague to reach third round – Australian Open Boys’ Singles 2012
Seventh seed, Kyle Edmund, made an epic comeback to overwhelm resilience posed by the Spanish lad, Pol Toledo Bague, in the Boy’s Singles event at the Australian Open 2012 on Tuesday. He registered a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over the 17-year-old Spaniard to book a spot in the third round at this first Grand Slam event held in Melbourne, Australia.
British lad took 85 minutes to send Bague home in their first encounter. Edmund was a set down when he made a comeback with double breadsticks and advanced into the third round at the Melbourne Park.
The opening set saw a series of serve breaks with both players showing their best tennis. However, the Spaniard capitalised on his fourth break chance in the ninth game and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line. Bague blocked only one out of four breakpoints he came across but converted four out of six break chances to his advantage.
Frustrated British teenager on the other hand got back on-roads in the second set. He blasted massive groundstrokes and went on a five games killing spree before Bague could hold on. He then held his serve once more and pocketed the breadstick in 27 minutes. Edmund brushed off both breakpoints he faced and cashed in both break opportunities.
Rising star, Edmund, carried his winning ways in the final set and reeled off the opening four games successively through his amazing agility. After the Spaniard held his serve in the fifth game, the British youngster stroke out the last two games and earned the second breadstick in 22 minutes. He plucked in entire serves without facing any breakpoint and converted half of the six break chances to his advantage.
The British will next face the eleventh seeded German, Kimmer Coppejans who also registered a comeback victory to set-up this meeting. The German seed lost his serve three times but broke Borna Coric’s serve seven times, sealing the deal with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory in two hours and 19 minutes.
Top seeded local star, Luke Saville, will accompany Edmund in the third round. He battled past French challenger, Lucas Pouille, in a three set thriller to reach this spot. The Aussie lost his serve twice but converted three out of nine break chances to his advantage, eventually sealing the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 success over the French Youngster. Saville also produced a better first serve share of 71 percent as compared to Pouille’s 55 percent and clinched an amazing 38 out of 58 points on it.
