British contender, Kyle Edmund, surprised everyone after stunning the second seed, Gianluigi Quinzi from Italy, in a three set thriller at the Boys’ Singles French Open 2012 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 7-6(1), 1-6, 6-4 victory against the 16-year-old to
power into the final eight at this second of the four Grand Slam event held in Paris, France.
The underdog showed top class performance to shock Quinzi in three sets in their first match-up. After earning this fame in two hours and 13 minutes, Edmund convincingly booked a place in the quarter-finals at this clay court tournament.
Both players played amazing tennis in the opening set and easily held their entire serves. Edmund produced a lower first serve share but hammered more winners and was clearly the better one. Despite failing to get the breakthrough, the Brit prevailed in
the tie-breaker and clicked the opener with a 7-6(1) win.
The seed showed his superiority in the follow-up set and went berserk. He blasted massive forehands to reel off the opening five games in a row before the Brit could hold on. Quinzi held his serve once again and sealed the equaliser with a breadstick.
Ranked 1319th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Edmund re-gained his strength in the final set. He blocked the lone breakpoint faced to keep his entire serves with self-assurance. The Brit got the breakthrough in the last game
and clinched the decider with a 6-4 score line.
All in all, the 17-year-old produced an almost equal first serve share of 56 per cent and impressively marked 47 out of 67 points on it. He also fired seven winners and carved out the victory with a single break of serve.
Next in queue for Edmund is the sixth seed, Kimmer Coppejans, who crushed the Argentinean rising star, Mateo Nicolas Martinez, with a breadstick to set up this meeting. The Brit has upset 16th seeded Daniel Masur in his opening round match and
if he plays his original game, he can shock another seed.
The fifth seed, Filip Peliwo, will accompany Edmund in the quarter-finals. He tumbled over Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in straight sets to secure this position.
