Kyle Edmund shocks Noah Rubin in opening round – Boys’ Singles US Open 2012
British rising star, Kyle Edmund, upset the 14th seed, Noah Rubin, in straight sets at the Boys’ Singles US Open 2012 on Monday. He jolted down a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the local seed to power into the second round at this last of the four Grand
Slam events held in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
The unseeded Brit broke his rival three times to carve out the victory in their first meeting. He needed almost an hour to outshine Rubin and progress into the round of 32 at this major hard court event.
Edmund made a sloppy entry at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He suffered the first blow in the fifth game and trailed at 2-3. However, the Brit unleashed his true form after that and reeled off four games in a row. He failed to block the
lone breakpoint he came across but capitalised on two out of four break chances to seal the opener with a 6-3 win.
The 17-year-old improved his game in the following set. He got the desiderated break in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. The Brit plucked his remaining serves with poise and cashed in his second break chance in the last game, subsequently clicking
the set by winning six games to three. He was never challenged with any breakpoint and ruled throughout the set.
All in all, Edmund spilled more double faults but fired four aces to neutralise the effect. He also clobbered a better first serve share of 60 per cent in contrast with the American’s 45 per cent and amazingly marked 26 out of 31 points on it.
Next up for Edmund is the Japanese contender, Shotaro Goto, who crippled Belgium’s Jeroen Vanneste with a breadstick to set up this battle.
The fifth seed, Mitchell Krueger from America, will accompany Rubin towards the exit doors. He endured a 4-6, 7-5, 3-6 loss against the Israeli challenger, Or Ram-Harel, in brutal three sets. The American cashed in half of the 10 break opportunities but
lost his serve seven times, consequently suffering this loss.
