Kyle Kendrick helps Philadelphia Phillies defeat Florida Marlins 8-1 – MLB Update
In the first of the two games played at the Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday, June 15, the Philadelphia Phillies’ starter Kyle Kendrick made a perfect comeback after a loose start to take his club to an 8-1 win over the Florida Marlins.
The 26–year-old Kendrick allowed a devastating one-run homer to the Marlins’ left-fielder Logan Morrison in the top of the first inning. In the later innings, however he made a come-back and remained successful in holding the Marlins to just this run until
the end of his seventh innings spell.
Apart from this run, he also consumed five hits and one walk but struck-out five batters on 88 pitches to take his fourth win after receiving three consecutive losses. However, he received a perfect back up from Juan Carlos Romero and closer Danys Baez,
as both did not allow any run over their single inning spell.
As the pitchers held the Marlins to only one-run, the Phillies’ batters crushed the Marlins’ pitching depth. After getting under a 1-0 deficit, Ryan Howard drove in a single off the Marlins’ starter Elih Villanueva to tie the game at 1-all in the bottom
of the first inning. Then short-stop Jimmy Rollins added an RBI single to take his club to a 2-1 position in the bottom of the second inning.
The Phillies’ batters then posted six overwhelming runs against Elih in the third inning to cement the Phillies’ 42nd win of the season. Third baseman Wilson Valdez entered the plate after Casey Utley, Ryan Howard and Ben Francisco has acquired third, second
and first base respectively. Valdez blistered a hard hit to the deep left centre-field and scored an RBI triple.
Elih then allowed a walk to Dane Sardinha and struck-out Kyle Kendrick but allowed a devastating 350-feet long three-run homer to Rollins to move the game to 8-1. This hit not only ended Elih game with eight allowed runs and five walks over just three innings
but also put the Marlins towards their 35th loss of the season.
The Marlins’ reliever Brian Sanches restricted the Phillies with a perfect three innings spell. He allowed just one run and one walk while striking-out two batters. Edward Mujica and Burke Badenhop did not yield any run over their small innings but it was
not helpful for the struggling Marlins’ batting line-up.
"We need consistency on the mound, a starter that can keep us in the game," Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "We haven't showed much offensively so we're putting a lot of pressure on the pitcher."
The Phillies have scheduled their top pitcher Roy Halladay while the Marlins will utilise Anibal Sanchez for their next match-up.
