Kyle Kendrick leads Philadelphia Phillies to 3-1 victory over Miami Marlins - MLB Update
Starter Kyle Kendrick throws seven innings as the Philadelphia Phillies outclass the Miami Marlins 3-1 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 10, 2012 in the first game of the three match series.
Kendrick did an excellent job by keeping the Marlins scoreless for a greater part of the innings. The fact the Marlins are coming off a high scoring game against the Washington Nationals shows the level of effectiveness Kendrick had to maintain on Monday
to stop them from making big hits.
Similar to the Marlins’ batters, Phillies struggled to connect initially.
However they managed to score three runs in the fifth inning which provided them the lead that remained intact until the end of the game.
Marlins will be extremely disappointed with their inconsistency in their performance. In the last game their batters routed the opposition but on Monday they took the heavy nosedive plunging to just three hits.
Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen brings to light the occasions that occurred during the game when his batters were in ideal positions to score runs.
"We had opportunities with the right people at the plate, but we didn't swing the ball well," Ozzie Guillen said.
Offensively left fielder Domonic Brown stood up for the Phillies. The homer that he hammered brought two runs for the team which proved sufficient in light of the fact that Miami’s offence was quiet throughout the game.
As far as the pitchers were concerned, not only the starter but the relievers were equally impressive in the game for Philadelphia. While Kendrick struck-out eight and gave up one run in seven innings, the relievers that followed him did not leak any runs.
Kendrick realises the importance of winning games for the team at this moment. The Phillies cannot afford to grow complacent with one or two victories because their winning percentage is still far from satisfactory.
"We definitely know where we're at," Kendrick said. "We've got to win every night. But we're in the hunt. That's fun. Hopefully we can make something happen."
As the Phillies plan for the next two games in the series, they cannot negate the ability of the Marlins to bounce back strongly. They will be looking to thwart whatever strategy the Marlins are going to come up with now.
