Kyle Kendrick shines as Philadelphia Phillies defeat Colorado Rockies 5-0 - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ starting pitcher, Kyle Kendrick had a remarkable day with the ball as he surrendered only four hits and threw his eight innings with an ERA of 3.19 in the Phillies’ 5-0 victory against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, Colorado
on August 2.
Phillies led off with 2-0 during the first inning. Chase Utley was grounded out to short-stop position as Jimmy Rollins scored a single run and Shane Victorino occupied second base. The second run for the Phillies was taken by Victorino when Hunter Pence
drove a double-run shot to deep centre-field.
In the second and third inning, the batters from both teams showed their wobbly performance and got out on easy pitches. Ian Stewart and Mark Ellis both flied out to left-field while at third base, Chris Iannetta grounded out without taking any run in the
second inning. Similarly, Phillies’ batters also seemed powerless as Rollins and Utley grounded out to second base while Victorino got out to left-field.
During the fourth inning, the Phillies advanced their lead 4-0 by posting another couple of runs. Ryan Howard hit a solo homer towards right-centre while Raul Ibanez scored a single run when Brian Schneider hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field. The pitchers
again stopped the hits of the batters by their impressive throws and did not give away any run from the fifth to seventh inning.
Kendrick allowed only two walks and had seven strike-outs on his 117 pitches. Speaking to reporters, he said, “It is what it is. Everyone knows I can start. Oswalt coming back is going to make us better. My changeup wasn't very good tonight but my cutter
and fastball were pretty good.”
Phillies’ manager, Charlie Manuel said, “KK was very good. This would rank up there with his best outing. When you get the lead and add two more on that's what really helps. Two runs in this yard doesn't hold up a lot.”
The Phillies were leading 5-0 in the eighth inning when Howard struck a one-run homer to left-field. In the ninth inning, there is no increase in the score of both teams as the batters played uneven shots. However, the Phillies got a persuasive 2-0 lead
in the three-game series played at Coors Field.
