Kyle Lohse fails to gather momentum in NLCS Game 4 after extended rest – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ starter Kyle Lohse failed to extend his team’s advantage in the National League Championship Series, losing against Randy Wolf of Milwaukee Brewers to see his team go down 2-4 in Game 4 on Thursday, October 13 at Busch Stadium in St.
Louis, Missouri.
Lohse last started for the Redbirds in the opener of the NL Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies and lost after being charged for five runs in 5.1 innings. Thereafter, he was not handed a start and was taking the mound after an extended rest
of 12 days. Accustomed to such delays in the regular season, Lohse was confident of overcoming the offensive strength of the Brewers, but failed to make it out of the fifth inning.
He allowed three runs amid six hits in 4.1 innings at a 6.23 earned-run average, striking-out three batters in the process. Lohse was strong enough to admit his loss and did not blame it on the extended rest. Expressing his thoughts after the game, Lohse
said, "I'm not going to blame it on the layoff. We're professionals and we've got get the job done. Tonight, we didn't do it."
Lohse’s horrendous pitching forced manager Tony La Russa to employ relief pitchers for a larger part of the game for the fourth consecutive time. Apart from Mitchell Boggs, all three relievers pitched perfectly to halt the flow of runs, but the damage had
already been done.
Wolf, on the contrary, resurfaced strongly after a dreary spell against Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL Division Series. He ended the Cardinals’ streak of scoring in the first inning and went on to win the game, allowing just two runs in seven innings and
striking-out six batters.
After allowing ten runs in his last two regular season starts, Wolf gave away seven runs in three innings against the Diamondbacks to see his team lose 6-10. However, he was overjoyed after the game and said, "Regardless of how the game went, I was satisfied
with the fact that I was going to have that opportunity. It's kind of a weird word, but it's redemption to go back out there."
With the series level at two-each, it will be vital to see how the Redbirds counter in Game 5 of the series.
