Kyle Lohse’s economical pitching helps St. Louis Cardinals beat San Diego Padres, 3-1 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ starter, Kyle Lohse had a remarkable day with the ball as he pitched eight innings with an ERA of 2.06 and had five strike-outs in the Cardinals’ 3-1 victory against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, San Diego on May 23.
Lohse gave away one run on five hits including one earned run. He permitted one walk on 118 pitches. Lohse was pleased with the way Colby Rasmus batted in a game. Lohse said, “That was a big pickup right there for Colby, a game-changer right there. He did
a great job, and after that I wasn't going to hang too many sliders.”
The pitchers threw pretty well in the first five innings and restricted the batters from scoring a run. The Padres missed out the scoring opportunities in the fifth inning when Rob Johnson was lined out to right-field and Dustin Moseley struck out swinging.
In the sixth inning, the Cardinals scored their initial run and got a 1-0 lead when Albert Pujols struck a one-run homer (355 feet) to left-field. It was considered his eighth homer of the current season.
The Cardinals’ Manager Tony La Russa had a huge ovation for Pujols. Speaking to reporters, he said, “One run. You know what had more value? It's the worst ball he hit. You watch, he's making contact like that. He might not have the first 10 days of the season.
He just keeps hitting it hard.”
On the other side, the Padres opened their scoring account in the seventh inning when Jorge Cantu hit a sacrifice fly towards right-field and Cameron Maybin posted one run to tie the game 1-all. No score was added in the eighth inning from either side as
the pitchers threw in good line.
In the ninth inning, Daniel Descalso singled to right-field and Skip Schumaker scored a single run. The second run during this inning was taken by Descalso on the single-run shot of Ryan Theriot off right-field. The Cardinals were leading 3-1 at the end
of the game.
Moseley was also economical with the ball, but the batters did not put runs on the score-board. He pitched seven solid innings with an ERA of 3.15. Moseley allowed one run on five hits and gave away three walks on 104 pitches.
