Kyle Lohse’s economical pitching helps St. Louis Cardinals defeat Houston Astros, 5-1 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ starter, Kyle Lohse had a notable day with the ball as he threw eight solid innings and struck out three batters in the Cardinals’ 5-1 victory against the Houston Astros at Busch Stadium, St. Louis, on May 18.
Lohse permitted only one run on six hits with one earned run and one walk. He threw the ball with an ERA of 2.17. Lohse said of his performance, “I just kept throwing it up there and letting them hit to whoever was somewhere, I don't know. I couldn't even
tell who was where at the end. We've got of guys that can play different positions.”
The first two innings of the game went score-less for both sides. However, the Cardinals started their third inning with a blast as they added four runs in and took a 4-0 lead. Yadier Molina and Daniel Descalso both contributed two runs for their team on
the one-run shot of Jon Jay towards the centre-field position.
Ryan Theriot posted a run when Albert Pujols singled to shallow left field. Jay completed a four-run campaign on the move of Lance Berkman to second base. The score-board was unmoved until the fifth inning as no batter was able to score a run. Pete Kozma
doubled to left-field spot while Tyler Greene scored a single run and gave the Cardinals a 5-0 lead at the end of the sixth inning.
During the press conference, Berkman said, “I didn't want to get jerked out of the game right there, I mean heck, there's adrenaline and everything else and then you can kind of identify it.”
The sixth inning of the game passed without score. Carlos Lee scored a single run when Chris Johnson drove a shot towards the centre-field position. With that single run, the Astros were able to cut-off their deficit to 5-1 in the seventh inning. The pitchers
were on top in the last two innings as both the teams went score-less.
The Astros’ starter Bud Norris was too expensive as he pitched five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits including five earned runs. He had four strike-outs and gave away three walks with an ERA of 3.93.
