Kyle Lohse’s pitching helps St. Louis Cardinals defeat Baltimore Orioles 6-2 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ starter, Kyle Lohse was remarkable with the ball as he threw five shut-out innings with an ERA of 2.78 in the Cardinals’ 6-2 win against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park, Baltimore on June 28.
The Cardinals’ short-stop, Ryan Theriot flied out to left-field and Jon Jay struck-out swinging at the top of the first as the Orioles’ batters were also score-less in the first inning of the game. Nick Markakis doubled to deep right-field but Vladimir Guerrero
was grounded out to first base without giving any runs to his team.
In the second inning, the Cardinals led off 3-0 by adding three runs. Mark Hamilton singled to right-centre and David Freese posted a single run while Colby Rasmus moved to third base. The second run was taken by Rasmus when Nick Punto drove a single-run
shot towards right-centre. Hamilton scored the third run to complete a three-run campaign when Theriot singled to centre-field.
From the third to the fifth inning, the batters were powerless and did not find a gap to score some runs. The pitchers threw in perfect line during this span. Lohse permitted just four score-less hits and struck-out two batters. He gave away only one walk
on his 69 pitches.
Lohse commented on the game and said, “I felt strong. I wish the rain didn't come. I felt I could have gone quite a bit deeper than five. But you can't do anything about the weather.”
During the sixth inning, Rasmus struck a solo homer towards right-field to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals’ batters posted two runs in the seventh inning and took a 6-0 lead. Punto scored a single run when Jay hit a sacrifice fly off left-field.
Matt Holliday homered to centre-field to put the second run on the Cardinals’ score-board.
The Orioles broke their silence during the eighth inning and reduced their lead 6-2. J.J. Hardy hit a one-run homer towards centre-field while Markakis posted the last run of the game when Adam Jones doubled to deep right-field.
In the ninth inning, Derrek Lee was struck-out swinging and Felix Pie grounded out to second base without any run. As a result, the Cardinals won their first game of a three-game series.
