Kyle Lohse’s spell helps St. Louis Cardinals defeat San Francisco Giants 6-1 – MLB Update
The St. Louis Cardinals finally succeed in splintering their three-game losing-streak crushing the defending World Series champions San Francisco Giants 6-1 on Sunday, April 10 at AT&T Park, San Francisco.
Top prospect Kyle Lohse pitched eight shut-out innings in head-to-head against veteran Barry Zito. While the visiting Cardinals kneeled out of the series with a win, their hitting was prowess and pitching depth revived.
The 32-year-old Lohse, who took a loss in his first start on Monday against Pittsburgh Pirates, made a triumphant revisit shattering Giants’ strong batting line-up. In his eight-shutout innings, the right-hand hurler allowed just five hits and one run, while
striking-out five batters.
"You can't get too worried about the way things are going this early," Lohse said. "Obviously you don't want it to turn into a trend. We just have to weather the storm and get through it and things will right themselves."
Lohse was not the sole highlight of the day as third baseman David Freese also joined the action and made manager Tony La Russa and rest of critics speechless. The 28-year-old stumbled the opponent, touching a tie-breaking RBI double to left-field in the
top of sixth inning. It sent the Giants’ starter Zito under such pressure that it disturbed his pitches and he consumed another double to Cardinals’ second baseman Skip Schumaker.
"All day I was battling my timing in the delivery," Zito said. "The ball was getting up. That is the core of my frustration in the outing was not throwing strikes. It's just something that gets out of whack when you try to do too much."
The right-hand slugger, Freese, continued his batting and launched a 370-feet long homer to left-field off Giants ball thrower, Guillermo Mota, who allowed two runs and five hits over two innings.
La Russa seemed pleased while expressing his hopes about possible winning start the club acquired as he assumed Sunday's triumph a fuel for future encounters. However, the club convalesces as still there are many points to be negotiated effectively to counter
the remaining games, as stated by La Russa.
Despite the impressive two-time National League’s Most Valuable Player, Albert Pujols, could not gain his momentum back. Playing in his final year of his contract with the club, Pujols set off zero for five to plunge his average to .143 with just one extra-base
through nine games. Pujols will become a free agent after this season as the club did not express any interest in signing any contract with him.
The Cardinals put in a brilliant performance to defeat the Giants. San Francisco was unable to get their offence to fire and struggled to contain the Cardinals.
