Kyle McClellan shines as St. Louis Cardinals beat San Diego Padres, 3-2 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ starter, Kyle McClellan was outstanding with the ball as he pitched six dominant innings with an ERA of 3.11 and struck out four batters in the Cardinals’ 3-2 win against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, San Diego, on May 24.
McClellan gave away two runs on two hits with no earned run. He did not give any walk on his 75 pitches. McClellan said of his game, “I made really two mistakes and both where hits. Other than that I felt like I was in control and was able to use all my
pitches. It's the big leagues, and they hit mistakes.”
Both teams started their first inning pretty well as the Cardinals scored one run at the top while the Padres posted two runs at the bottom of the first inning. For the Cardinals, Jon Jay added one run on the throwing error of the Padres’ first baseman Brad
Hawpe. Lance Berkman moved to first base on an infield single.
Hawpe hit a solo home-run to centre-field position and Ryan Ludwick scored a second run for the Padres. The score-card moved 2-1 at the end of first inning and the Padres were leading at the moment. The pitchers performed well in the middle innings of the
game as they went score-less on their pitches from second to sixth inning.
The Cardinals tied the game 2-2 during seventh inning on the single run of Daniel Descalso while Ryan Theriot was grounded out to second base and Colby Rasmus occupied the third base. The game remained equal until the end of ninth inning so an additional
10th inning was given to both sides which also passed without score.
In the 11th inning, the Cardinals went ahead 3-2 when Descalso singled towards the centre field and Allen Craig posted one run. Tony Cruz was the new entry in the Cardinals’ roster after the broken right index finger of Gerald Laird.
Cruz went 3-for-5 but was unable to add a run. But the Cardinals’ Manager Tony La Russa was contended with his performance. La Russa said, “You saw his potential. He caught well, blocked the ball. He's still a developing catcher, but he's at a nice level
right now and should get better. He stands at the plate and has a very nice swing.”
The Padres’ starter, Aaron Harang was little bit shaky as he threw seven innings and gave away two runs on eight hits.
