Kyle Orton to play for the Kansas City Chiefs – NFL News
The Kansas City Chiefs have got hold of Kyle Orton on waivers Wednesday. The former Denver Broncos’ quarterback was added to the Chiefs team who were at number ninth in the NFL's waiver order.
Orton was released by the Broncos on Tuesday following a start of 1-4. Broncos decided to go ahead with Tim Tebow as the quarterback. Orton will be a free agent once this season ends.
For the time being the Chiefs now have an additional option available to them other than their own quarterback Tyler Palko. Tyler Palko hasn’t fared well recently having had three interceptions in Monday’s game resulting in the
Chiefs’ loss to the New England Patriots.
Palko made his start against the Patriots as Matt Cassel was out for the rest of the season with a right hand injury. Cassel had injured his hand during week 10 while playing against Broncos. Following a hand surgery, Cassel was
ruled out for the season.
Chiefs’ coach Todd Haley said he was looking forward to Orton being a part of the team.
"We have consistently communicated that we are always looking to create competition and depth within our team. We feel adding Kyle to our roster reinforces that goal” Haley said.
Orton would be reporting on Thursday but it is not clear whether he would be part of the team in Sunday’s game. In case he does not then Palko will be making his second start looking forward at making amends to his performance
against the New England.
Palko seemed unthreatened by Orton’s arrival, saying all he knew was Orton had become a part of the team as told by Hailey to him after practice. Palko said he had received no instruction from the coach as to who would start the
game.
"I've been the practice squad quarterback, I've been the No. 3, the No. 2, and the starter last week. I prepare the same way, with the same intensity, and that hasn't changed. I've never wavered or changed my mentality." Palko
said.
The Chiefs will now pay the remaining $2.5 million to Orton that he has remaining out of an annual salary of $8.9 million. Earlier the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys failed in their claims they had put forward for Orton.
