Kyle Phillips’ homer helps San Diego Padres defeat Atlanta Braves, 3-2 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ catcher, Kyle Phillips was impressive in the end of the game as he hit his first homer of the season to give the Padres a convincing 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field, Atlanta on May 30.
Both teams scored their initial run in the first inning and tied the game 1-all. Ryan Ludwick was grounded out to third base and Eric Patterson scored a single run for the Padres. At the bottom of the inning, Martin Prado posted a brilliant tie run on the
drive of Brian McCann to deep centre-field. The second inning passed without any run on the score-board.
During the third inning, the two teams again contributed one run each and levelled the game 2-2. For the Padres, Aaron Harang added one run when Ludwick singled to centre-field. Patterson occupied the third base in the third inning. Brian McCann hit a single-run
shot towards right-field and Prado scored his second run of the game to keep his team alive.
The pitchers raised the momentum of their teams from the fourth to ninth inning and the score-board was unmoved as they restricted the batters from scoring any runs. Harang was economical as he threw six solid innings with an ERA of 3.88 and allowed just
two runs on six hits including two earned runs. He struck-out five batters and permitted two walks on 102 pitches. The relievers also shined for the Padres as they went score-less in combined four inning pitches.
Harang commented on his performance and said, “I got lucky on that one. I'm not used to running the bases out there, and (Gonzalez's) ball hung up more than I thought it would.”
Additional inning was given to both sides and the Padres took a 3-2 lead when Phillips hit a home run (373 feet) towards right-field. George Sherrill was a little bit shaky for the Braves as he gave away the final run of the game. He was unable to contain
the Padres effectively, leading to their eventual loss.
