Kyle Quincey and Detroit Red Wings avoid arbitration as they settle with 2-year deal –NHL Update
Defenseman Kyle Quincey signed a new 2-year deal with the team he had made his NHL career with seven years back, the Detroit Red Wings. The deal was signed just seven days before the arbitration hearing that was scheduled to be held on 25th of
July.
Quincey had decided to go to arbitration with 16 other players on 4th of the July but both parties solved the issue before the arbitration hearing to sign the contract that is worth $7.55 million for two-years, which makes $3.775 million for one
year.
This also made Quincey, the second-highest paid defenseman in the Red Wings team. Only Niklas Kronwall of Sweden gets more than him as a defenseman as he gets $4.75 million for one year whereas Jonathan Ericsson, who is also from Sweden, is ranked third
in Detroit Red Wings’ highest paid defensemen, as he gets $3.25 million in one year.
The Kitchener, Ontario, born defenseman is expected to fill in the boots of Nicklas Lidstrom after the legendary NHL player took retirement after playing hockey after a very long career.
Departure of Brad Stuart was also something that made, signing Quincey important. Stuart had left Detroit Red Wings because of some of some family reasons and was not re-signed, before being traded to San Jose Sharks.
General Manager of Detroit Red Wings, Ken Holland said,
“There's an opportunity here with the losses we've had on defence with Stuart and Nick Lidstrom”.
The 26-year-old, who would turn 27 on the 12th of next month, first played for Red Wings in 2005-2006 season, when he made his NHL debut. But most of the times he was made to play for their affiliates in the American Hockey League (AHL), Grand
Rapids Griffins.
He played for Red Wings in three different seasons but played just 13 games, one game in the 2005-2006 season, six games in the 2006-2007 season and then again six games in 2007-2008 season.
Quincey then played one season with Los Angeles Kings before moving to Colorado Avalanche, where he played two and a half seasons before being called back to Detroit Red Wings.
Holland also added while talking about Quincey,
"Kyle was in the top four in Colorado. We think there is tremendous opportunity for him now in Detroit. He is a guy who can step in and eat some minutes and give us some offense."
