Kyle S. Mcphillips and Ipek Soylu enter into the second round – US Open 2012 Girls’ Singles
Kyle S. Mcphillips overcomes Marika Akkerman 6-2, 6-2
18-year-old American junior, Kyle S. Mcphillips ousted Marika Akkerman and qualified for the second round of the US Open 2012 held on the hard courts of the Flushing Meadows on Wednesday.
The Canadian junior took a below average start and lost the initial two games giving her rival a 2-love lead. The American broke her serve twice, i.e. in first game and seventh game of the opening set but the
botched to oscillate the momentum. Akkerman struggled hard to prevail over and miserably lost with a 2-6 score.
A similar trend was witnessed in the following set of the match, however, the right-hander Canadian native tried to break her rival’s serve in the fifth game. Akkerman filtered away the pressure with her iconic
serves and marked her 6-2 win.
The Canadian junior had a relatively better first serve accuracy of 61 percent but she merely pocketed 19 of 34 points. She could not even convert a single break point out of four presented to her. The American
had a lower first serve accuracy of 56 but managed to bag away 21 of 30 points.
Ipek Soylu battles past Victoria Rodriguez 3-6, 6-2, 6-3
Turkey national Ipek Soylu successfully sidelined Victoria Rodriguez in the first round of the US Open Girls’ Singles. The 16-year-old defeated her rival in a closed set match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 later that day.
The Turkish participant exhibited a relatively poor pace since the start. She tried her utmost to get the better of her opponent but the Mexican broke her serve in the seventh game instead, marking a 5-2 lead.
As the game kicked forward, Soylu suffered another break of serve, losing the set by 3-6.
In the start of the second set, both the participants were unable to hold their initial serves but their scores line quickly levelled to 1-all. The two contestants exchanged cracking winners and the Turkish contender
smoothly made her way forward, securing all the consequent games in succession and wrapping up the set with her 6-2 lead.
In the decider, both the players tried their best to clinch the lead in the series and by the end of the sixth game, the scoreboard indicated 3-all. Soylu then took a flyer from there and snatched her 6-3 win.
The Turkish right-hander pounced two aces and converted 30 of 49 points. On the contrary, Rodriquez could not strike a single ace in the entire match and but she managed to bag away four of eight break points
presented to her.
