Kyle Thompson posts his third win on Nationwide Tour at the Rex Hospital Open
Kyle Thompson romped to a big victory at the Rex Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield Plantation when he overpowered the fast approaching contenders to win his third title on the tour.
Thompson posted a final round of three-under to close for an aggregate of 14-under to collect his second Rex Hospital title after his first victory in 2007. He cleared the field with one shot.
"I never counted myself out all day. Before the day started I thought 16-under would be enough," said Thompson. "I knew nobody was running away with it today so every shot was going to be important."
The final day turned out to be more evenly poised between the contenders as no less than six players were eyeing the top slot till the final hole. Thompson averted a Playoff when he managed to get an approach at 152 yards off the tee on his final hole. He
moved over to birdie the hole while the rest of the contenders dropped their shots, failing to force a Playoff.
"I knew it was going to come down to the wire," said Thompson. "It set up perfectly for me because I like to fade the ball," he said. "It was every golfer's dream putt -- seven feet with a little right-to-left break."
Scott Brown, the second round leader along with Troy Kelly and Martin Flores, all settled tied for the second slot after their misadventures on the final hole.
Thompson remained consistent throughout the weekend to post rounds of 68, 66, 68 and 68, closing for a 14-under, 270. His final round also included a double bogey on par-four, 8th and another bogey on par-four, 14th. He carded six birdies
to make up for the back to back losses.
Thompson collected a cheque of $99,000 and has now soared to No. 6 on the money rankings on the Nationwide Tour.
Will Wilcox, who earned his tour card before the Stadion Classic at University of Georgia Athens, via Monday Qualifier, posted another solid round of six-under, 65 to finish for joint 11th. The rookie is having a whirlwind season so far especially
after his joint 3rd finish at the Stadion Classic. He has moved to No. 20 on the money list and is poised to be a great player on the tour field for the rest of the season.
J.J.Kileen, Kyle Reifers and Ryan Armour finished tied for the fifth spot with their aggregate scores of 12-under each.
