Kylie Palmer clinches Women’s 800m freestyle gold – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Kylie Palmer of Chandler clinched gold medal of the Women’s 800m freestyle on second last day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Wednesday, March 21.
The 22-year-old Palmer remained prominently ahead of her challengers from the start of the race. With her remarkable pace and utter determination, she earned her way to the top of podium for gold medal.
She completed her initial two rounds of the race in a time of 2 minutes and 05.31 seconds. She was followed by Jessica Ashwood of SOPAC, who remained marginally slower from her and ended her first two rounds by touching the wall with the timing of 2 minutes
and 05.53 seconds.
Palmer succeeded in strengthening her position for gold medal in the next two rounds, where she elevated her efforts and ended her initial half of the swim by posting a time of 4 minutes and 13.85 seconds. She remained almost half body length ahead of Ashwood,
who covered the equivalent distance by clocking an effort of 4 minutes and 14.44 seconds.
Palmer continued her exhausting efforts in the following rounds as she concluded her 600 metres of the swim by tapping the wall with the timing of 6 minutes and 21.17 seconds. Subsequently, the 18-year-old Ashwood enveloped the similar distance by producing
a time of 6 minutes and 22.53 seconds.
With her smothering efforts in the final two rounds, Palmer proved her eligibility for the title of the discipline by posting an effort of 8 minutes and 26.60 seconds. Ashwood captured second position of the distant freestyle discipline as she hit the finishing
end with the timing of 8 minutes and 27.97 seconds.
The third spot of the event was secured by Melissa Gorman of Redcliffe League, who stayed almost two seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and emerged on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by submitting an effort of 8 minutes and 29.73 seconds.
Furthermore, the winners collected accolades for their flawless efforts after the session while Palmer was delighted to book her spot in the Australian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
