Kylie Reifers, Justin Peters and Mathew Richardson tied for lead at Rex Hospital Open on Nationwide Tour
No less than three players were tied for the lead at the Rex Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Rayleigh, North Carolina in the opening round on Thursday June, 9. Kylie Reifers of Wake Forest, Justin Peters and Englishman Mathew Richardson are
all tied up for the top slot with their scores of six-under, 65 each.
Reifers opened up his round with a stunning spree of birdie-eagle-birdie to send shivers down the spine of the rest of the field.
"I feel my game's been there the last couple of weeks. I just haven't gotten the results," said Reifers. "This year I went back to playing some old equipment and playing the clubs I want to play. I'm feeling like I've gotten back to just playing golf and
it's taken a while. I worked last year on some technical things and that's not really me. I'm getting back and getting excited again. I've had glimpses and it's a matter of it all coming together."
Reifers started off the season with a joint sixth finish at the Panama Claro Championship but failed to make the cut in the rest of the season. Meanwhile, Richardson was one of the two players in the field who carded bogey-free first rounds to break into
contention for the top slot. Peters was happy to be back on the course on Nationwide tour since he failed to qualify for several tournaments in the season.
Carter Jenkins became the third youngest player to be contesting on the Nationwide Tour and has just stepped into the junior year at Leesville Road High School. Jenkins qualified to play on the tour when he won the Junior Invitational on the same course
on Sunday. The young debutant has an edge over the rest of the field for his knowledge and familiarity with the TPC Wakefield.
The tournament has a purse of $550,000 with a winner’s share of $99,000. Many of the players in the field are budding young college graduates who have qualified to play on the tour which often works as the launching pad for the coveted PGA Tour. Rex Hospital
Open supports the Rex Health Care Foundation and major chunk of the earnings goes for the funding of the hospital.
