Kyrie Irving out for the next month after fracturing left index finger – NBA News
The Cleveland Cavaliers have not been a very happening franchise since the departure of LeBron James. The Cavs went from being Eastern Conference favourites in one season to being not even near to qualifying for the playoffs in
the next. However, The Cavs picked up Kyrie Irving with their number 1 pick in the 2011 Draft, and Irving lived true to his expectations by earning rookie of the year honours last season. He was part of the NBA select team that scrimmaged with the U.S Olympic
Basketball team in Las Vegas this July, and turned a few heads while there which warned him praises from Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. This season, Irving was having his breakout season and was averaging above 20 points a game, but was dealt a severe blow
when it was learnt that he had suffered a hair line fracture on his left index finger, and will be out of action for the next month.
Irving suffered the injury on Saturday night in a loss to the Dallas Mavericks, although at that time it was only thought of as a contusion. He played the game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, but struggled to score going
4 of 14 from the field. After the game, a scan showed that he had a hairline fracture.
The Loss of Irving will be a huge one for the Cavaliers, as he was the leader of the team, the offense maker and the scorer as well as the point guard and floor general. Without him, not only will the Cavaliers lose even more games,
they will also lose their fan base and television ratings as everyone tuned into Cavs games for Irving.
Donald Sloan is expected to take Irving’s position as the starting point guard of the team, although he is nowhere near the level that Irving is on. Dion Waiters will be expected to step up in the absence of Irving and lead the
team, but he has not had a very successful season so far and it remains to be seen if he is up for the challenge. The Cavaliers season just got a big hit, and it is uncertain if they will be able to recover from it.
