Kyrie Irving has fully recovered from his hand injury and is looking forward to opening the season for Cleveland Cavaliers
Kyrie Irving went through a temporary scare in the offseason when he broke his right hand during a summer league game for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Irving delivered a bad pass during the game and in frustration,
struck his hand intentionally against a padded wall. He immediately knew something was wrong. The guard had a surgery performed on his hand four days later, and was unable to use his right hand for the next two months.
At the Cleveland Cavaliers media day on Monday ahead of the commencement of their training camp though, Irving was all smiles as he did his round of interviews and posed for photographs. The reigning rookie of the year has recovered
from his injury and is 100 percent healthy as he looks towards the next NBA season.
"My left-hand floater is something serious right now. I can actually tie my shoe with one hand. My right hand, I'm 110 percent. No problems,” said Irving.
Irving was the top pick of the 2011 NBA Draft, and lived up to his expectations by joining an elite club of players including Allen Iverson and LeBron James who averaged 18 points and 5 assists in their first NBA season, coming
in as top picks. He is anticipated as the future franchise player of the Cavaliers and the man who can put the team back on the Eastern Conference map.
"I expect him to build off that. I expect him to be better than he was last year. I think Kyrie is going to have a breakout season,” said Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott.
Irving worked out hard in the offseason to add five pounds to his frame, as he wanted to become a little stronger so that he could finish well on penetration plays and had the physique to take some beating down in the low post.
"I feel like I added another piece to my game, which is my post game. Coming down the court, I feel like me just adding that piece and being able to withstand a whole entire game without getting knocked down, and just being more
ready,” said Irving.
With Anderson Varejao fully recovered from the broken right wrist that had him missing out 40 games last season, and the rookie Dion Waiters entering his first season for the Cavs, the team is looking forward to putting up a better
performance from last season and make a run for a playoff spot.
But for that to happen, Irving needs to rise to the occasion and live up to the expectations.
