Does anyone know how long it takes to get from L.A. to San Diego via the train system. I am going to be in the L.A. area for a few days week after next and I would like to look up some of my old friends.

  1. ITS APPRX 2hours and 50 minutes on the pacific surfliner.

  2. take the metrolink to oceanside, then hop on the coaster.  Save some paper!

  3. 3 hours.

About the same as driving with no traffic.  Train is faster if there is traffic.

  4. About 2hr 50m

  5. about 2 and a half hours

and if you want somethine cheap and just as good try metrolink trains its like half the price of amtrak

  6. It is 128 miles in 2hrs 40-50 minutes (avg 45-48 mph including stops); eleven times a day normally with 7 intermediate stops. It is not normally faster or cheaper than the bus, but most people prefer the comfort of the train.

The trains were almost full before the gas crisis, so I would get advanced tickets. Increasing frequency and speed is difficult since it requires double tracking for the entire length. That will almost certainly necessitate two costly tunnels in San Diego county.
