l asked this question before but realized l didn't ask it correctly so trying it again.

l have a small outside Avery and l use Cinnamon for ant problems but now have a problem with rodents we have a field in back of our yard which is the reason for the rodents, we have a cat and he kills them but l worry he may get sick besides their is to many for him to keep up with.

what l was hoping for is some answer to a natural non toxic barrier l can put along the fence to keep them out l due not use pesticides unless l absolutely have too. l have heard you can use pepper has any one used this? and does it work?

THANKS

  1. There are commercial repellents available. The active ingredients are typically peppermint oil, lemongrass, and citrus oil. You could try the repellent, use the oil on your own, or plant lemongrass and/or peppermint. None of these will harm your pets.

Also ivy attracts rodents so if there's any in your yard/field I'd suggest replacing it.

If you have access to electricity there are also some electronic/sonic barriers on the market.

  2. The only suggestion I have is to get rid of what they are coming to your house for. Make sure they don't have access to food or water. I know you can seal off holes with steel wool so they can't get into your house.

I really try to limit the chemicals in my life, but I do break out the poison when it comes to mice and rats. I have a small box that the poison goes into and they crawl in and eat it, then go away and die. It's supposed to be safe for my dogs even if they eat a dead rat.

  3. Simplest thing possible: Rat/Mouse traps. They are usually for sale at local stores or I'm sure you could find them at a Wal-Mart

  4. I would have a heart attack if I saw I mouse or rat. I have seen them in my grandmas house. They scare me so bad! I heard that peanut butter can help.

  5. 1)pepper will not do anything

2)keep the grass cut short around the Avery so the rodents do not have a hiding place

3)there are some types of Ultra Sonic devices that are rated for outdoor usage if you have electrical power at the Avery you might be able to try this however I do not know what effect it may have on the birds

4)For control methods contact a local Pest control company to see if you can purchase from them a Exterior RTU Bait Station with a T-Rex snap trap. The snap trap fits inside the baitstation and baited with peanut butter it will kill any rodent that enters it without the use of poison baits. If you do use poison baits in these devices they are locked inside the baitstation and you need a special key to get into it,the bait to use is a solid bar bait that fits onto a peg in the baitstation and will not fall out or be carried out

5)another repellent product is called ROPELL this is a spray on repellent to the grass but would need constant application due to rain and heavy morning dew that would dilute it

6)remove any storage around the Avery to eliminate all rodent harbourage(like firewood, pallets, garbage cans)

7)if the grass is cut short, and you have no hiding places around the Avery and keep it in relatively sanitary condition should help rodents away,if you go with the covered snaptrap stations place along the property line(field line) away from the Avery

  6. Buy these super cheap mouse traps at walmart. the glue ones. they work, i used to have 7-8 mice a day and theyd all get caught.. this may be cheesy but we would put food near it. im not sure if pepper works but u could sprinkle pepper on the glue..

if not use the mouse traps the ones that snap which i think are gross when u have to clean it up..

    well good luck. [:

  7. Any mint plants will run them off.

  8. use mothballs...if you go to homedepot or lowe's they have a whole department with humane killers, or barriers.
