LA traffic 5S and 405S - when does traffic start? How bad is it?

I'll be driving from Fresno down to LAX. I'll be on 5S/405S in the afternoon. How much extra time do I need?

Expect traffic--regardless of the day or time.    And if there isn't regular ol' traffic, there will be construction.   Rush hour is probably 6:30 - 10:30 a.m., and then 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.  but it depends on where you are.  

Also, the 405 is pretty much ALWAYS a parking lot, so prepare for the worst there.

I think the last time I drove from LA to Fresno I gave myself 5 - 6 hours.

From Fresno will be fine until you get into the San Fernando Valley.  Starting there, it will be BAD.   The 405 is generally congested from 7 AM to 9 PM Monday through Saturday.  Allow PLENTY of time.

It shouldn't be too bad til you get to the north end of the San Fernando Valley.
