LAST NAME: CATES, where is this from? France? Germany?

I need to know where this name originated.

I don't even know where to start.

Is it French? German? Mexican?

    Aside from that.. Cates is a name found early in colonial NC, and is closely connected to my own research.  It also went through Tenn and into Texas.  I'd feel comfortable that it is English.

    For your own lineage, you start with YOU, and identify back to your parents/ grandparents. Use records.. you will soon get into historical records such as census, so forth.  If you'll stay in touch with me, I may be able to share good info with you that I have in my records.

  4. Wendy gave you good information. House of Names is a surname product peddler.  So called "family crest," a misnomer for a coat of arms, do not belong to everyone with a particular surname.
