  1. If you want to avoid the subway (almost completely):  At Flatlands Av, take  a BENSONHURST HARWAY AV bound B6 Bus to  BAY PKWY & BATH AVE  then transfer to a  BAY RIDGE 4 AV bound B64 Bus to 86th St/4th AV (last stop).  You can either walk the 9 blocks to 95th St or take the R one stop to 95th St (but it would cost you another fare since you used the free transfers on the buses).

    Subway options:

The way the subways are laid out (built by different companies who were in competition with each other) back in the early parts of the 20th century (thru the 1930's) there is no easy way to get to 95th St-Bay Ridge by subway from Canarsie w/o going into Manhattan first EXCEPT for one option which would cost you 2 fares (unless you have an unlimited card.

Single fare: with only 1 transfer

Take the L to Union Square and then transfer to a downtown R train and take it to the last stop.

Single fare with many changes of  but you stay in Brooklyn (this is more for information - I wouldn't really want to go this way)

Take the L to Broadway Junction.  Go downstairs for the uptown C train (or the A if it is running local).  Get off at Franklin Av, go upstairs for the Franklin Av Shuttle,, take that to Prospect Av, change for the uptown Q train.  Take that to Atlantic Av, go upstairs and transfer to downtown the R train and take that to the last stop.

Double fare (unless you have an unlimited MetroCard):

Take the L to Livonia Av.  Cross over to the opposite platform and walk to the exit at the front.  Use the exit and walk along the walkway to the Junius St station on the #3 line (this is where you'll have to pay the 2nd fare w/o an unlimted card).  Take the #3 to Atlantic Av and change to the R train (go downstairs and follow the signs) and take a downtown R to 95th St.

Why isn't this a free transfer?  The local community wants one but the MTA makes a lot of excuses (safety mainly) so it isn't happening.

  2. The R train does NOT go that high on Manhattan.

Transfer to the 4,5,6 on 14th st.  Take that to 96 street.
