I'm going into my last year of high school, don't know what i want to do after.. being pushed to go to university extremely hard, in my mind i have no future plans and just want to go with the flow, but apparently doing so would be a step in the wrong direction as seen by my mom. seems like everything she wants me to do i don't want to be a part of. i absolutely hate school and i just want it to be over. i need some advice. school starts in a week

  1. I graduated high school last year (2008) and im going to University this year to study Social Work. Im Canadian so my view on post secondary education might be different if your not canadian. Honestly, don't let anybody tell you what to do because chances are you won't like it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend going with the flow though. But if you dont know what you want to be, dont worry about. Last year sooo many of my classmates had no idea what they wanted to do and applied to general programs like undeclared etc. 17 is an awful young age to pick a career choice and life plan. Just enjoy your final year, because it does go by fast. Even if you dont like school I find my year went by fast. If you dont want to get involved in university, try college or apprenticeship like the guy said above. If you still feel your not ready, take a year off and travel or work. Or even co-op to try out different career oppurtunities like teaching. Best of Luck!!!

  2. Well if you don't like school, have you considered learning a trade? Trades people have the potential to make a lot of money. If so, look into seeing if your school has a OYAP program. Appretinceships are hands on learning to learn to be an electrician, plummer, mechanic, construction worker, and so forth. Depends if you like working with your hands.

  3. I would give it a try. I liked college infinitely more than HS. And it's much harder to go back once you stop, too. If your parents are paying you really should give it a shot. If you really hate, then you'll never wonder what couldn've been.

I would also say, learn something vocational or technical. Social work, IT, medical technician, etc. You won't be in school for as long and it will be hands on instead of academic. And there's always demand for those kind of skills.

  4. Well, I can understand how high school can suck because you're forced to take so many classes that you don't like. However, in college (unless you're going to one with lots of requirements) you have a lot more choice. I think you should give college a shot and only take classes that sound interesting to you for the first year. If you don't know where you're going with your life it's probably far better to go to college where you can experience many different subjects than to go to trade school where you only learn one thing. That is unless you want to try a bunch of different trade schools.

Edit: by college I also mean universities

  5. i think its a bad idea to not go to high school. maybe check it out. i mean, lots of people hate high school but come on, its dragged on this long. why not just get it over with? why waste all the time you've put into school work in the past to just, drop out???
