Question:

LCD Owners???

I have had a bad experience with 42" LG LCD TV 720p. The first one that I got, got extremely hot after being on for just like an hour, the logos or words on programs/commercials were blurry, and the picture would lighten/darken for no reason (about twice a minute). SO, I took it back and exchanged it for the same make/model different TV, and the same night that I brought my second one home after it had been on for a couple of hours it started humming, it hums on mute, with the speakers off option in the menu, when I have the volume totally down and use my surround sound speakers. What could this be, the other one w/ the picture problems didn't buzz like this. I am about to take this one back and just get my money back, and pick a different tv. Any suggestions?

  1. I have a 26" Sanyo (1+ year old) and a 20" Sharp (6 months old) and have never had problems with either.  Both are operationally quiet but I will tell you that they both do generate a fair amount of heat.  Anything generating bright light like this is going to give off a fair amount of heat. Unlike an LCD monitor, a TV is meant to be viewed from farther distances and it's therefore reasonable to assume it will generate more light and heat to enable comfortable viewing. Unless you are being physically burned when you touch the TV's "hotter" areas I would not be alarmed with the temperature.  As far as the noise, I am not too sure.  Maybe there is a speaker issue or there is a piece of circuitry on the edge.  I don't think LCD screens normally let out high-pitched noises like their picture-tube predecessors sometimes did.

  2. Must be an LG issue. I have family who have gone through a couple of LGs, one of them dying with the most horrendous noise I've ever heard a TV make.

I'd certainly recommend a Samsung or Sony. Avoid Vizio and Sanyo.

  3. Get a Samsung. There is a reason why they are the number one selling LCD tvs. Actually several reasons, reliability being one of them.

  4. vibration from a transformer inside the TV can cause the noise, that is not good for a new TV.  If it is still under warranty I would complain.
